Inactive Status Replaces CAE Renewal Extensions
Kathryn Aberle, CAE
In response to an increasing number of certificants whose circumstances prevented them from meeting renewal requirements, the CAE Commission recently changed the policies regarding renewal deferrals and requests for extensions. Effective June 2008, the renewal deferral policy, which was limited to committee-approved hardships, has been replaced with an inactive status policy which provides all CAEs with the opportunity for an extension if needed.
Certificants who request this status will be listed in ASAE records as inactive. The CAE designation cannot be used by a certificant on inactive status.
To reactivate the credential, the certificant must submit a renewal application with the appropriate fees, as well as 40 hours of qualifying professional education (or 30 hours of education plus 10 hours of leadership activities) in the three years preceding the application submission date.
Inactive Status Policy
- Inactive status is available to CAEs who do not meet their recertification eligibility requirements but who do not wish to permanently lose their certification status.
- Inactive status provides CAEs with a three-year period beyond their period of active certification in which to meet their recertification eligibility requirements.
- While an individual's status is inactive, the CAE credential and designation MAY NOT be used.
- To apply for inactive status, certificants must complete the appropriate form and pay the inactive status fee. Applications must be received prior to end of the certification period for the request to be honored.
Reactivation
The CAE certification may be reactivated at any time during the inactive period as long as the recertification requirements are met. Reactivation will be approved by meeting the recertification requirements, including payment of appropriate fees and fulfilling professional development or activities requirements or by reexamination. Professional development credits must be accrued within the three years leading up to the resumption of certified status.
If you have any questions regarding the inactive status policy, please contact the ASAE CAE staff at (202) 626-2759 or caedept@asaenet.org.
